How to measure your Storm / Screen Door

Measure the width of the opening in 3 different locations as the diagram shows. Take the widest dimension and subtract for the door clearance/gap (a typical door clearance/gap is 1/8”-3/16” on each side of the door). This will allow for hinges, lockset and natural movement associated with wood storm/screen doors. Each opening is unique, please consult with your door intaller to verify your actual door size.

Measure the height of the opening in 2 different locations as the diagram shows. Take the tallest dimension and add 1”. Typically every door will need to be trimmed to match the opening. A typical door clearance/gap is 1/8”-3/16” on the top and bottom of the door, this will allow for natural movement associated with wood storm/screen doors. Each opening is unique, please consult with your door installer to verify your actual door size.

You may trim off up to: 3/4" on each side, 3/8" off the top, and 1" off the bottom of the standard size storm/screen door without significantly affecting its structural integrity.

Installation tips

We recommend you hire a professional carpenter to assist you in measuring and installing your new storm/screen door and hardware.

Even though you have given us your custom measurements, your custom storm/screen door may not fit your door opening "out of the box". Every doorway is unique and has its own personality and many are not square, so the door must be trimmed and/or planed to fit smoothly within the opening. We recommend you trim and install your door, with hardware, before finishing. This helps eliminate the need to "repair" the finish after your door is installed.

We recommend using 3 hinges and at least one heavy duty closer per standard door. If you are using a single heavy duty closer, it should be placed in the center of the door opening, if you choose to use two heavy duty closers, they should be placed at the top and bottom of the door opening.
